Contours surround strokes you draw with the Brush tool.

Brush strokes require more memory to store than do shapes you draw with the centerline tools: Polyline, Pencil, Ellipse or Rectangle.

You can convert your brush strokes to centerlines to reduce the amount of memory required for storage (file size).
You can also delete control points in contours to reduce the file size of your animation.
